A 40th Anniversary Memory

What was our welcome to the Captain Lord Mansion? It was a brisk and cold, but bright sunny day 40 years ago on March 17th, 1978, when we first came to Kennebunkport. We were a young couple nine months into our search for a business that would give us an escape from the corporate world of fast food and advertising.

As we crossed the old green bridge over the Kennebunk River and proceeded into Dock Square, we were greeted by a solitary seagull sitting on the bridge railing. In the distance we saw the steeple of the Congregational Church silhouetted against a bright blue sky. As we traveled a short distance along Ocean Ave, we were awed by the old homes and buildings situated along the river. At only three tenths of a mile out of the square, turning onto Green Street, we caught our first glimpse of the magnificent building that is the Captain Lord Mansion. We’ll never forget our first impression; we were awestruck at its size and magnificent setting at the head of the sweeping lawn known locally as the “River Green”. It sat as a commanding presence in a neighborhood of similarly- aged large houses, but it was the biggest and baddest of all!

It was love at first sight and all our other dreams coalesced into owning this fantastic property. There were many roadblocks before we closed on the deal in only 90 days on June 15, 1978. But, that is for another chapter in the story.
