Vacationers know that Maine is famous for lobsters and lighthouses; therefore, I am starting my recommendations of the New List of Top 5 casual Kennebunkport Maine restaurants as recommended by the Captain Lord Mansion with a repeat, Mabel’s Lobster Claw.
Mabel’s was one of former President, George H. W. Bush’s favorite casual seafood restaurants; he loved their freshly-caught lobster offerings. One dish for which Mabel’s is still famous is a shrimp & scallop-stuffed and baked lobster. When visiting us here at the Captain Lord Mansion, Bev’s dad loved going to Mabel’s specifically for that dish! Because he was a lobster-lover, I think it was his favorite of all the restaurants in town. Interestingly, Bev’s mom was allergic to lobster; however, my mom loved lobster! Mabel’s is only open from April through late October.
There is a new year-round restaurant named The Village Tavern which opened about a year ago in West Kennebunk; it is a short 10 to 15 minute drive from the inn. Chef Rich Lemoine and his wife have created a wonderfully-casual atmosphere combined with excellent food of a variety other than seafood. Check out their website to see Rich’s tremendous past experience cooking at Kennebunkport area restaurants. Bev’s favorite are the Steamed Mussels; I have never seen such plump, flavorful mussels. Also, they are always free from grit which is sometimes a challenge with mussels. This is a favorite with locals and does not take reservations, so plan an early dinner.
Another alternative to seafood is The Ramp, which is located on the harbor in Cape Porpoise; it has the best burgers in town. Again, when your seafood need is satiated and you just want a great tasting burger with all the fixings, this is the place to go. This is another favorite with locals and it has a very small dining area, so you often rub shoulders with area residents. Be sure to engage them in conversation about the area! This place has great food combined with a funky atmosphere, but does not take resrvations!
Another casual choice of dining which is located in Cape Porpoise is the Wayfarer. Bev and I recently dined here and were impressed by the newly-renovated atmosphere, cleanliness and excellent food. The menu choices are varied and all freshly-prepared. This is a BYOB restaurant, so you can make a choice of wine from the Captain Lord Mansion wine cellar and take it with you. The Wayfarer does take reservations and is open seven nights a week, all year. This is a blessing for many of our “Serenity Season” guests when there are few restaurant choices early in the week.
When you want good beer combined with terrific seafood dishes, we recommend Federal Jack’s; it is the home of Shipyard Ale and other custom brews made popular by the Shipyard Brewing Company. Federal Jack’s offers choice brews, excellent seafood as well as panoramic views of the Kennebunk River. Reservations are advised in season. Federal Jack’s also offers Brewery Tours, and our office staff is pleased to arrange one for you.
When staying at the Captain Lord Mansion, we’ll be happy to make reservations at one of these casual Kennebunkport, Maine restaurants, well at least at those that take reservations and give explicit driving directions for you. Your innkeeper, Rick Litchfield
