The Maine Department of Environmental Protection certifies the Captain Lord Mansion as an "Environmental Leader" for implementing pollution prevention and conservation of resource actions and other environmentally friendly practices. We received our certification in a letter dated July 25, 2009.
We have been recycling bottles, cans, glass, plastics, cardboard and paper for years. Also, we recently instituted several conservation practices such as replacing old toilets with water-saving models, changing to water saving shower heads and shutting off public-area gas fireplaces in summer. Over the last 12 months we changed most of our cleaning and laundry supplies to green-certified non-toxic chemicals. Last summer we replaced all of our old A/C units with new "Energy Star" units. In April we replaced all our old kitchen appliances with new energy efficient units. Our practicies have reduced our water, electric, propane and oil consumption by as much as 30%. Additionally, we built a compost area last summer and compost most of our yard waste.
These practices have earned us this award from the State of Maine and we are thrilled that our efforts have been recognized by the state. While you are with us, we appreciate if you would assist us by using our blue recycling bins in each guest room for bottles and cans. We also appreciate our guests shutting off lights, fireplaces and other electronic appliances when leaving their room. Thanks, Rick Litchfield, your innkeeper
